National Suicide Prevention Week…Also a Time for Remembrance

National Suicide Prevention Week is September 5-11, 2010, with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2010. The week and the day are an opportunity to educate people on the warning signs of suicide and to remember our loved ones who have died by suicide. Often it is through telling our stories that we are able to help other people and have an opportunity to share our memories of our loved ones. More information on both events is available on the American Association of Suicidology web site. To purchase your purple and turquoise pins and/or wristbands, go to the Chellehead Works store.

Posttraumatic Growth Suicide Loss Study seeks participants

Parents who lost their child, of any age, to suicide within the last two years are needed to participate in a study on the effects of this loss. Despite the burden of suicide in the United States and judgment by mental health professionals that this cause of death creates a unique form of grief, there is very little information available on this form of bereavement. The goal of this study is to help contribute to our understanding of what a survivor experiences and how we can better help survivors in the future. The survey is available online, is completely confidential, voluntary, and should take about 20 minutes to complete. It is important to fill out all parts of the survey. If you are interested in participating and contributing to this important body of research, please log-on to: www.posttraumaticgrowth.com.

Newsweek and Family Suicide Grief: Joan and Melissa Rivers

See Michelle’s latest blog entry discussing an article about Joan Rivers in Newsweek and how it shows that even over 20 years after the death of a loved one, family members can be in different places in their grief (http://www.newsweek.com/2010/05/15/can-we-talk.html).
